Week 3 – Porth Dafarch

This weeks photo is an HDR one taken at Porth Dafarch on Angelesey whilst at the Angelsey Sea Kayak Symposium with Desperate Measures. It comprises of 10 exposures ranging from 1/2000 through to 1/30 all at f/4.5.

It was nice to get out on the water in nice, albeit rather windy, weather. Over the weekend I had the chance to paddle a few sea kayaks in the bays around Porth Dafarch including the brand new Valley Etain and the Northshore Atlantic. I won't pretend to be a good enough sea kayaker to provide a full review of either boat but they were both good fun paddling around the rocks and bays of the Anglesey coast and if you are after a new boat then they are worth considering.

Photomatix is Magic

I shall be getting a copy when I have some money! This is a HDR image that I took in Italy. It is greatly lacking in 'shadows' detail for the sky (I think anyway) but still comes out quite well (I think!).

HDR Photography Again

Whilst in France on a fairly chilled out family holiday I spent some time reading more about HDR photography. I've been trying to get some nice HDR shots for a while and so far they have been fairly underwhelming. I have before now been using the auto-bracketing mode on my camera and using Photoshop to try and process the results. Turns out I may not have been making life entirely easy for myself.

I re-read 2 books that I had scanned over previously firstly there is 'A World In HDR' by Trey Ratcliff and secondly 'Practical HDR' by David J Nightingale. I took 2 points from these 2 books that I had maybe not fully appreciated the first time I read them.

Processing Photographs

Most of the photos that I have taken so far for my 'Project 365' have been almost as shot on the camera. Generally I have opened them up in Photoshop to convert them from NEF (Nikon's RAW Format) to JPG. I have on some tweeked the black and white points using the curves tool.

The photo for day 10 I played a little more with the midpoint values on the curves too to get it to look how it actually looked outside. I think it came out quite well but still didn't quite capture what I as a person could see on the day, but it was as close as I could get it.

HDR Photography

I got interested in HDR a few months ago after seeing some of the awesome photos at http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ and thinking that I would like to be able to do that!

The idea is that a photo can never truly capture everything that you would see with your eyes. This is because your eyes continually adjust to differing light levels allowing you to see the whole picture. Unfortunately with a camera you choose your settings and take the shot meaning that you often loose detail either in the dark parts of the picture, the light parts of the picture or both. HDR is a method of taking and combining multiple pictures at different exposures to try and capture the image like your eyes would.
